VANCOUVER — The industry’s best chefs, sommeliers and foodservice elite gathered Monday at the Sheraton Wall Centre to celebrate Vancouver magazine’s 23rd annual Vancouver Restaurant Awards.
Hawksworth Restaurant emerged with a handful of awards, including Best New restaurant, Best Upscale restaurant and Best Design.
“It reflects Vancouver as we want to be seen: sophisticated but youthful, globally influenced, yet firmly rooted, modern, but not extreme,” summed up one judge. The resto’s wine director Terry Threlfall was named Sommelier of the Year and David Hawksworth himself took home the award for Chef of the Year. “This was wholly unexpected; we hoped for Best New and were thrilled to land Best Upscale, but to secure Restaurant of the Year, so soon after opening, was above and beyond what we dared wish,” said the chef upon accepting the award.
In other categories, Miradoro Restaurant took home the gold medal for Best Winery/Vineyard Dining, Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar won gold in the Best Seafood Restaurant category, and Thierry Busset of Thierry café won Best Pastry Chef.
Kirin Restaurant Group received the magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award for its 25 years serving Cantonese cuisine to the Vancouver masses; and Trafalgars received the Green Award for its smart recycling and composter system, which has resulted in the restaurant producing virtually no garbage since July 2011.
