CALGARY — While many across the country are desperate for the return of the good old-fashioned Saturday morning farmers’ market, the CBC recently reported that Calgary’s market managers say they may have too much of a good thing. According to the report, market owners say a recent spike in the number of such operations across the city is making stiff competition for the all important consumer dollar. Does this mean that the local-food movement is now well and truly turbocharged? It’s too early to tell, but given the near disappearance of the market institution, coupled with its recent surge in popularity, slow-food devotees must be beaming.
