CALGARY — A Calgary woman is dissatisfied with the monetary restitution offered by quick-service giant KFC after her daughter allegedly choked on a bone in a supposedly bone-free meal, the Calgary Herald reports.
According to the Herald, Tina King’s two-year-old daughter, Kylee, choked on a quarter-sized bone in a popcorn chicken meal. The toddler survived the incident, but King is upset with KFC’s offer of $250 and lack of apology. "To say here's $250, shut your mouth, sign your paper and be done with it — to me, that's not acceptable," King told the Herald.
A spokesperson for Yum! Restaurants Canada, which owns KFC, said the company is taking the incident seriously.

EDMONTON — Alberta Health Services (AHS) is rethinking the menu provided at provincial nursing homes and hospitals after receiving numerous complaints from dissatisfied residents and patients, CBC News reports.
AHS instigated a standardized menu earlier this year, but after it received the thumbs down, a poll was conducted to help determine the menu shortfall. It turns out residents and patients want greater culinary variety with more meat, potatoes, cabbage, perogies and other home-style meals.
According to the CBC story, some potential improvements will include constructing menus with the help of culinary teams and executive chefs and developing a computerized menu-management system.

CALGARY — Bernard Callebaut has accepted his fate and is preparing to move on after news that a bid to keep his company, Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, fell flat.
Callebaut’s nearly 30-year-old namesake chocolate business went into receivership in August, as ATB Financial was reportedly owed nearly $4 million. Last week, the receiver, Deloitte & Touche, recommended the assets be sold to a company backed by Callebaut’s former VP of Operations, Brian Beck and a dealer of three stores in Edmonton.

CALGARY — The River Café family has just grown with the opening of its sister restaurant, Boxwood Cafe last month, and the buzz is already good with word that lineups have already snaked out the front door.
Like the River Café at Prince’s Island Park, Boxwood is nestled in a park and features seasonal, regional cuisine. The difference is the Central Memorial Park eatery caters to a more casual crowd in a smaller space, with an open kitchen, counter service and takeout.
The prices may be cheaper, but the calibre remains. “We wanted to be able to serve the kind of quality food that we’re dedicated to at River Café, but in a less formal way,” explains, Sal Howell, proprietor of the fine-dining mainstay and new casual eatery.
