Alberta Schools to Eliminate Junk Food PDF Print E-mail

junk-food-pretzels-salty snacksEDMONTON, ALTA. — Starting September 1, food vendors in Alberta public schools will not be able to sell foods listed in the “choose-less-often” category outlined in the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines (food high in calories, fat or sugar), says a story published in The Edmonton Journal.

Alberta public schools worked with foodservice operators by renegotiating contracts for vending machines and making deals to supply healthier items, such as cheese strings, bottled water, fruits, plain popcorn and healthier version of chips to comply with guidelines.

Calgary Launches Food Truck Project PDF Print E-mail

CALGARY — Calgary is the new home of a food truck pilot project, which was launched last week by Calgary city officials, YYC Food Trucks, Tourism Calgary and the Downtown Calgary Association.

“Our goal is to understand what needs to be done — together — to best regulate and recognize food trucks as an industry in Calgary over the long term,” said a city rep, of the program that will feature everything from burgers, to pizza and gelato.

Wheat Harvest Concerns Prairie Farmers PDF Print E-mail

TORONTO — Western Canada Wheat farmers are concerned about this year’s harvest due to rain and flooding combined with competition from international markets, according to a Globe and Mail report.

“There are a lot of things that are worrying if you isolate your thoughts on wheat,” Neil Townsend, a grain market analyst at the Canadian Wheat Board, was quoted as saying in The Globe.
