XL Foods Union Calls For Inquiry |

EDMONTON — The union representing XL Foods employees is concerned about food safety at the plant and is calling for a public inquiry as the number of people ill with E.coli associated with contaminated beef increased to 12 on Wednesday.
“We are calling on [the plant] to take it seriously. You can replace all the aluminum, all the stainless steel you want at the plant, but if you don't give your workers the tools to perform the job properly, we're not going to solve this problem," said Doug O’Halloran, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 401 in a press conference.

EDMONTON — An Edmonton man who allegedly became ill after eating meat contaminated with E. coli produced by XL Foods has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the company that is in the middle of what’s purported to be one of the largest food recalls in Canadian history.
“It doesn't seem like anybody is being held responsible at this point,” the claimant, Matthew Harrison, told CTV News. “It seems like there was some negligence in the way it was handled.”

VANCOUVER — The Keg Royalties Income Fund announced its second quarter results, reporting a 5.4-per-cent increase in gross sales year over year.
The company, which operates 102 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, reported gross sales of $118.5 million for the three months ended June 30, up $6.1 million from the same period last year.

MONTREAL — MTY Food Group Inc. (MTY) and Berthelet Food Products Inc. (Berthelet) have struck an agreement to bring MTY’s food products to retail stores in Canada.
“MTY is proud to have signed [an] agreement with a solid partner, who has extensive experience in marketing licensed products into retail stores,” said Stanley Ma, president, chairman and CEO of MTY Food Group.
