TORONTO — A pop-up sandwich shop in Toronto recently went mobile, when owner Matt Basile purchased a used truck and converted it into Fidel Gastro’s.
The resto on wheels offers sandwiches made with slow-cooked meats, such as The Toronto Cheesecake, with medium rare rib-eye, caramelized onions, havarti cheese and a fried egg and other unique food combinations such as French Fry Pad Thai, with fries instead of noodles and pulled pork instead of chicken.“Our two most popular sandwiches right now are the Sloppy José, which is a braised brisket, baked bean and roasted corn aioli sandwich, and our Sgt. Slather sandwich, which has pulled pork with homemade barbecue sauce, guacamole and crushed tortilla chips,” Basile is quoted as saying by torontofoodtrucks.ca.
The food truck will be featured in Basile’s new reality series, Rebel Without a Kitchen, which chronicles his transition from pop-up to food truck. It’s expected to air in April on Travel and Escape.
