TORONTO — Following a sudden eviction notice on December 30 and a court battle, Real Jerk, a popular Toronto-based Caribbean restaurant, will close May 31.
After receiving a notice of eviction, the owners took their new landlord to court and were awarded an injunction to stay open till the end of 2012. However the restaurant had to pay an additional $5,700 in rent to the courts each month, after March.1.
“It was a foregone conclusion that we would have to leave,” Ed Pottinger, Real Jerk’s owner, was quoted as saying by the National Post. “We just wanted to leave on our own terms. Now is the best time. We reached an amicable solution with the landlord.”
Real Jerk is expected to reopen in a new location, but details haven’t been confirmed. “We are negotiating with two or three locations right now,” said Pottinger. “We’re very close with one. I won’t be announcing where it is until I have that signature on the dotted line, but we want to try and keep it in the neighbourhood.”
There is speculation a new Irish pub called An Sibin will fill the space left by Real Jerk.
