Former Ocean Choice Workers Find Jobs PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 May 2011 10:42

SOURIS, P.E.I. — After a tough couple of weeks for former employees at the recently closed Souris, P.E.I.-based Ocean Choice plant, a silver lining has emerged.

According to Innovation Minister Allan Campbell, provincial reps have met with 180 of the 300 laid-off workers, and the P.E.I. Journal Pioneer reports more than 200 attended job sessions in the city.

"To date we have about 80 of the displaced employees who have found employment, mainly in the seafood processing sector at some of the other processing operations in Kings County, Seafood 2000 in Georgetown, Mariner Seafoods in Montague and Beach Point Processing," said Campbell yesterday, May 4, as reported by CBC News. "We're having a session again tomorrow for the workers who have yet to find employment."

OCI Leader and Premier Square Off PDF Print E-mail

SOURIS, P.E.I. — The saga between Ocean Choice International (OCI) and the Prince Edward Island government continues with CEO, Martin Sullivan, responding to Premier Robert Ghiz’s comments about the decision to close the seafood purveyor’s Souris lobster plant — laying off 300 workers.

This comes after Ghiz reportedly received a last minute request for financial assistance before the plant shutdown Monday. "We were given ultimatums for 24 hours, 48 hours, or they were going to announce a shut down. No one in their right mind can make the best possible decision in short periods of time like that," the premier said at a press conference earlier this week. "That is called scare tactics and coming in and basically putting a gun to someone's head. We did not want to go down that road."

Crane Lobbies to Subsidize Ocean Choice Workers PDF Print E-mail

SOURIS, P.E.I. — Prince Edward Island’s opposition leader Olive Crane is appealing to the provincial government to provide short-term assistance to some 300 people affected by the recent Ocean Choice announcement to close its Souris, P.E.I., lobster processing facility and put it up for sale.

The PC leader is asking a wage subsidy be put in place to help plant workers through the transition as they struggle to find new jobs on short notice and worry about employment insurance running short.

Grade-A Prices PDF Print E-mail

CHARLOTTETOWN — P.E.I. beef producers are seeing some of the highest prices in years, CBC News reports.

Members of the P.E.I. Cattle Producers Association told the CBC price hikes have left them optimistic, though some say previous lean years might make recovery less swift.

"The mood with cattle producers is cautious optimism and a sense of hope in the air. The prices have been going up. We are up to $1.83 [a pound] at the plant in Borden this week, and the price in Ontario is a little bit above that," Peter Verleun, chair of the Association, told the news outlet. "We were down to $1 for the longest time; $1.30 was quite common. We're back to the level, or almost to the level, we were at in 2003." Add a comment
